[Dani Rodrik](https://www.ethics.harvard.edu/people/dani-rodrik), a Faculty Associate at the Edmond & Lily Safra Center for Ethics, and [Archon Fung](https://www.ethics.harvard.edu/people/archon-fung#:~:text=He%20focuses%20upon%20public%20participation,Innovation%20at%20the%20Kennedy%20School.), a member of the Center's Faculty Committee, are among more than 80 Harvard faculty members who pledged to donate ten percent of their salaries for up to a year. The initiative is intended to support the University in its resistance against the Trump administration's attempts to freeze billions in federal funding.

In a[ *Harvard Crimson* article](https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2025/5/1/faculty-pledge-salary-donations/) authored by staff writers William C. Mao and Veronica H. Paulus, Harvard Kennedy School professor Dani Rodrik emphasized the faculty's shared responsibility in this moment of crisis: "If we as a faculty are asking the University administration to resist the Trump administration’s attacks on academic freedom, we should also be willing to share in the financial sacrifice that will be necessary."

A [*Boston Globe* article](https://www.bostonglobe.com/2025/04/30/metro/harvard-professors-pledge-10-percent-of-pay-academic-freedom/) written by Tonya Alanez underscores the growing concern among Harvard faculty regarding academic freedom and the unequal impact of Trump's actions across University affiliates. In a letter addressed to University President Alan M. Garber, faculty members wrote that their collective financial pledge "signals \[their\] commitment as faculty members to use means at \[their\] disposal to protect the university and, especially, staff and students who do not have the same protections."
